Breast Deformities

Breast > Breast Implant Revision, Removal & Replacement

Asymmetry of the breast is a common finding. Though most are subtle differences in shape and/or size. Major differences in the breast are a source of emotional and body image disturbances.

Breast deformities can be developmental, something you are Born with. Those include tubular breast, underdevelopment of one breast and skeletal deformities. They can be also a result of surgery, biopsy, lumpectomy, partial mastectomy or trauma. There can be differences in size, shape or due to scarring related to implants.

Developmental Deformities may present as birth defects such as Poland's syndrome where there is absent or under development of the breast. The chest muscle is also affected with varied degree of developmental abnormalities .

They may not be recognized till complete growth have occurred, or present at puberty as asymmetric breast development with one breast being much larger than the other. The breast could look normal, but different in size.

Tubular breasts, a condition frequently seen, where the breast looks elongated, high constricted inframammary line

Capsular contracture seen after implant surgery, where the capsule (scar) around the implant gets tight causing hardening of the breast, Pain and deformity of shape, due to displaced implant. Treatment consists of releasing The tight capsule, or capsulectomy, creating a new pocket for the implant and repositioning the implant, if need. Adjusting the pocket, and using acellular matrix to reinforce the repair.

Displacement of implants contributing to the greatest number of patients requiring re-operation. The deformity consists of abnormal shape and location of the breast and the implant. Depending on the severity of the problem, the correction may involve multiple surgeries. Basically the breast is reshaped by releasing the breast tissue, and repositioning of the implant with reconstructing the pocket of the implant including the use of acellular matrix for support. Other problems include implant deflation or rupture causing changes in the Shape and size of the breast.

Treatment requires changing the implant with or without manipulation of the capsule.

Each individual deformity has to be looked at individually and specific to that person and their
history of previous surgeries and attempted repairs.

These repairs are difficult and require expertise and knowledge in all aspects of breast surgery.
