Rhinoplasty - Cosmetic surgery of the, nose job.

Baltimore Plastic Surgery

  • Upper Face: Forehead, eyebrows and upper lids
  • Middle Face: Cheeks, lower lids and nose
  • Lower Face: Mouth, chin and neck

Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure that reshapes the nose to fit the rest of the facial features. Reshaping the nose may be achieved by reducing or increasing the size of the nose, removing the hump, reshaping the bridge of the nose, refining the tip and remodeling the angle between the nose and the upper lip. The nose may require narrowing at the bridge or narrowing of the nostrils. The nostrils may also be reshaped.

Aesthetic surgery procedures of the nose may include:

  • Increased projection of the nasal tip with tip refinement that may involve reducing the nasal projection.
  • Removing the nasal humps, bone and/or cartilage.
  • Narrowing the bony pyramid of the nose.
  • Changing the length of the nose by lengthening or shortening, to achieve harmony with the rest of the facial features.
  • Correction of the crocked or hooked nose.
  • Correction of the saddle nose deformity where, the bony height is inadequate due to surgery, trauma, or congenital characteristics of the nose.
  • Correction of the abnormalities of shape and size of the nasal structures.
  • Harmony between the nose and the chin projection is extremely important.

Therefore a good accurate analysis of the face and the boney structures of the face is an important step in planning for the surgery. This requires a full knowledge of the facial proportions. Knowledge of aesthetic aspects of the nose is very important.

The result is dependant on accurate analysis, and the surgical plan, then the accurate execution of the surgery.

Cosmetic Surgery of the Nose

The approach to access the different structures of the nose:

  1. Open Rhinoplasty Technique:

Where a small incision in the Columella is made, and the remaining incisions used are well hidden inside the nose. Open Rhinoplasty is more accurate and offers a higher degree in refining the nose. The Columella scar is barely noticeable.

  2. Closed Rhinoplasty:
  3. All incisions are inside the nose. This offers limited access and therefore limited degree of control.

Nasal Obstruction: difficulty in breathing from one nostril or both. This condition may accompany any nasal deformity. Structurally it may be due to a deviated nasal septum and/or enlarged turbinate.

Correction of breathing problems can be corrected at the same time. Correct a deviated septum or reduce the turbinate with or without the use of a spreader graft. Strut grafts support the nasal valve and improve on breathing through the nose. However if nasal obstruction is due to allergies surgery will not change the breathing problems. Treatment in that situation is medical control of allergies.
